Lawmakers duel over wording in state oath

advertisement

"I, being a citizen of this state, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this state nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God."

It is indeed antiquated. It was for a bygone era when politicians got shot for lying and cheating. Nowadays, we just re-elect them. - H2

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Technically speaking a duel is where two persons stand back to back and then pace a certain number of paces, then fire. Most politicians nowadays would stab you in the back, out of habit.

After giving it some more thought, I think it should be repealed. There was a time that a liar and a cheat would get challenged to a duel. Then they passed that oath amendment and an honest fella lost any chance of getting anywhere in politics.
